Tartan Day
The Caledonian Club of PEI will hold Tartan Day Celebrations on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 1:00 p.m., commencing with a Flag Raising ceremony at Historic Province House, Charlottetown. Premier Robert Ghiz, CCPEI President Eleanor Boswell, Chief Cecil MacPhail and Piper Duncan Crawford will be in attendance.
At 2:00 p.m., Club members will attend the Legislative Assembly. Charlie McGeoghegan, MLA for Belfast-Murray River will rise to recognize the club members, and will present a brief history of when Tartan Day was proclaimed in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. He will also announce that the Government of Canada has now officially recognized April 6 as Tartan Day throughout Canada.
“In response to the letter from our Nova Scotia neighbours, M.L.A. Stanley Bruce made the first to the Government of Prince Edward Island. April 6th was proclaimed Tartan Day on Thursday, April 2, 1992, when a resolution in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, moved by Stanley Bruce, MLA (4th Kings) and seconded by Libbe Hubley, MLA (4th Prince) now Senator Hubley) was carried unanimously.”
At 3:00 p.m., President Eleanor and Chief Cecil will host a Tartan Day Celebration at St. Marks Presbyterian Church Hall, 7 Tamarac Avenue, Sherwood. James Fennie, from Nova Scotia, will be guest speaker, and entertainment will include piping, highland dancing, Scottish songs, “Tartan Day in Canada” and Auld Lang Syne.
Everyone is invited to wear some plaid in honour of their Scottish heritage and enjoy refreshment.
